The ultimate goal of the Riverton Art Festival is to make a positive impact on our community.  The Riverton Art Festival is a forum for introducing established artists, new/upcoming artists, and their work to the surrounding community.  In conjunction with the efforts on our two performance stages, the festival creates an atmosphere that invites creative interaction between artists and their patrons.  This encounter provokes deeper thought, a better understanding of art, and the importance it plays in our lives.  By presenting the visual and performing arts simultaneously, our event provides children and adults an opportunity to learn, be educated, and appreciate art through very emotional and expressive mediums.

The Riverton Art Festival was founded in 1998 with the main focus being art education.  It was created by Camie Lloyd, an artist and art teacher, who wanted to create a local art festival that, would be affordable for the artists and easily accessible to the public.  The initial event was a one day festival, which took place at the Riverton Community Center (12820 South Redwood Road).  The entire operating budget was $7,000, provided by the Riverton City Arts Council, artist booth rental fees, and local business sponsorships.  There were 20 artists and one performance stage (which was 8 sheets of plywood held together with duct tape).  Over the last 13 years the event has grown and transformed into a three day event, with over 50 artists, and two performance stages.  Ten years ago the festival location changed to the Riverton City Park (1500 West 12800 South).  There were 20,000 people in attendance for the 2011 - three day festival.

Admission has been FREE from the beginning; the goal is for admission to remain FREE.  The entire festival is staffed by volunteers; they provide hundreds of hours of service.  The stage is professional and covered with a canopy in order to accommodate all types of the weather. The stage show cases dance/physical performances (local high school and cultural dance groups) and also music/vocal performances (the Riverton Metropolitan Jazz Band performs a free concert).  The vending artists are required to make their own wares and a booth rental discount is available if the artist provides a\n educational “hands-on” art activity. Last year the festival sponsored a 5K race named the “Cancer Thrasher” all proceeds go to the cancer society, this will continue to be an annual event.
