About

JT Trawick, Portland, OR

Member Since: February 24, 2020
Festival biz experience: 15+ years
Portland, Oregon
Short:
Generally catering to the crowd, JT covers a wide variety of music within the acoustic Americana spectrum.

A unique, rhythmic approach to the guitar makes the perfect backdrop for fiddle or voice with his originals and covers of familiar early country & jump blues. His own songs range from comical hilarity to poetic individuality while touching on matters of the heart.

Throw a couple original fiddle tunes into the mix and you've got a nice evening of rooted American lore, alive and in-person.

Long:
Known for his smooth, clear voice and authentic phrasing, Jonathan “JT” Trawick continues a rich tradition of singing from deep within the Ozark hills. Whether singing a classic such as I Wonder Where You Are Tonight, his Grandpa's Yellow Leaves of Autumn or his very own Boston Town, JT is sure to deliver.

Raised in the foothills of the Ozark Mountains in Conway, Arkansas, JT began playing guitar at 19 years of age. His Dad and Grandpa, both Arkansas State Fiddle Champions and reputed musicians passed on the music and soon, JT was an in-demand rhythm guitarist at local and regional fiddle contests, square dances and jams. It was during this time that JT recorded the album, Crosmer/Trawick with Jeremy and Charlotte Crosmer. Upon moving to Fayetteville, Arkansas in 2006, JT began finding a home for his mandolin playing and singing. He joined forces with Derek Linn and Julie Russell to form The Hobknobbers which quickly gained acclaim locally and regionally. JT worked with several northwest Arkansas based groups during this time including Shannon Wurst and Allison Williams and the Hot Ash Stringband. His first western swing dance band, The Western Fling began performing regularly in the northwest Arkansas area. In 2013, JT moved back to the Pacific Northwest where he was born and teamed up with National Champion Fiddler, Aarun Carter. In January of 2014, they were selected to record Volume 1 of the Deep End Sessions, a project produced by David Bunn. David says of the project, “..we're gathering a collection of old-time music from some of the finest musicians today in the tradition.” The project has been featured on the front page of the Los Angeles Times as well as The Huffington Post. 2014 also marked the beginning of his western swing dance band, Well Swung. Their first release (October 2015), a cover of the Bob Wills classic, Ida Red was voted Top 5 in the Western Swing Song category of the Academy of Western Artists Willie Awards. Recently, JT & Rowdy Mountain, a new bluegrass outfit was unveiled. Be on the lookout for local and regional performances. JT is still in demand at fiddle contests across the United States for his rhythm guitar playing. His book, 10 Texas Style Guitar Workouts has received positive reviews and he plans a more in depth text in the future. Stay tuned for the occasional tour, JT loves being on the road!
