Nedware Pottery, North Yarmouth, ME
Nedware focuses primarily on functional pottery—I particularly like to make all kinds of bowls: small, very large, and everything in between. I also create vases, mugs, tumblers, plates & platters, lamps, flowerpots, mirror frames—the list continues to expand. The pottery is informed by elements of the natural world and by abstract design. Nature creates patterns that are more abstract than any modern painting I've ever seen. I don't imitate it as much as I draw inspiration from it. And like nature is always changing, my style continues to emerge and develop as I produce more work.
I was born in Boston, Massachusetts and currently live in North Yarmouth, ME. I began making pottery while at prep school in the early 1970s. After high school, the interest waned, the opportunities dried up, and life took over. But I fostered a quiet longing for this creative outlet for 30 years until 2001 when the passion was reignited. I began attending pottery classes at various art centers in the Philadelphia area and later enrolled in the University of the Arts in Center City, Philadelphia. While at U Arts, during studio class critiques, my youthful classmates began to refer to my varied creations as Nedware. There and then the name Nedware Pottery was born. In 2005 I graduated with a bachelor of fine arts, specializing in ceramics. Since then I've been creating pottery in Philadelphia, PA and now North Yarmouth, Maine (since November 2012) where I have a small studio next to my home.
