Quilting For Community Quilt Walk & Fundraiser

Northridge, CA

Status: Updated

Quilting for Community lines Reseda Blvd in Northridge Village with colorful quilts and free outdoor family friendly activities. In celebration of one year of building community through the art of quilt making, Quilting for Community, along with local Northridge Village business owners, will feature handmade quilts created by students & teachers of the Opportunities for Learning Charter High School, guests of the San Fernando Valley Rescue Mission Shelter, as well as experienced and novice quilter volunteers across the San Fernando Valley. Quilts will be displayed on the storefronts along a section of Reseda Blvd in Northridge Village, radiating from Kingdom Vacuum and Sewing at 8923 Reseda Blvd. from 10:00am – 4:00 pm on Saturday, March 21, 2020. Visit the Quilting for Community Welcome Center Tent on Reseda Blvd. & Rayen Street to get a map of all of the activities along Reseda Blvd. Follow the map to find free activities, displays, quilts and clues for the Quilt Walk Scavenger Hunt. Our free family activities include: • Block-Printing- paint a block of fabric so that our volunteers can incorporate them into a quilt • How Many Hands Display- see how the quilting process works and how many hands touch a quilt from planning to finish • Mending Station- learn basic mending and walk away with an iron-on patch • Scrappy Selfie Wall- Take a selfie in front of a back-drop made of fabric scraps that we kept out the landfill • 135 year-old Crazy Quilt- See the work of our foremothers and learn about their use of scraps in 1885 • Ways to Quilt Display- learn some of the many ways one can stitch a quilt • Design Board- Construct quilt designs just like the experts do • Fabric Play at the Café- cut & paste fabric art to take home • Quilt Walk Scavenger Hunt- Find clues and win a prize • Volunteers are welcome for this day as well as for our mission in general. Contact: 818-527-2055 In support, Kingdom Vacuum and Sewing will be hosting their Royal Sale that includes talented locals selling a variety of handcrafted items and quilts. We invite the community to come out and enjoy a variety of textiles & crafts. Our mission is to build community by providing a safe, creative space to learn the art of quilting. We give quilts to members of the community who suffer physical, mental and/or emotional hardships. “Quilting for Community is committed to sharing the craft of quilting to ALL ages no matter race, creed, religion or socioeconomic status. Intergenerational collaboration, creativity and giving is our goal” – Lizz Leral, Executive Director Our goals are multi-layered in that we focus on inter-generational collaboration. We engage teens by having them design their own textile. We then pair them with quilt vets to design a quilt together. We showcase finished quilts and then donate to various organizations and/or individuals who may be suffering emotional, mental and/or physical hardships including, but not limited, to Patients of local hospital NICUS, PICUS and Cancer Centers. We are run by volunteers and donations. Our free workshops are held at Kingdom Sewing & Vacuum in Northridge, CA. Participants include students from the charter high school, Opportunities for Learning, Guests of the San Fernando Valley Rescue Mission and anyone who drops in on any given Wednesday or Friday from 10am -1pm.
