What We Do
Aid A Veteran is a public, non-profit organization dedicated to helping needy veterans of our armed forces who have fallen on hard times and need assistance. Aid A Veteran (AAV) was founded to provide veterans with shelter, clothing, food, and job placement assistance.
Too many of our veterans today are homeless. It is estimated that on any given night, about 131,000 veterans are homeless in America. Below are statistics on homeless veterans in the United States, as reported by the National Coalition for Homeless Veterans.
- 12% of the homeless population in America are veterans
- 47% are Vietnam Era vets
- 17% are post-Vietnam vets
- 15% are pre-Vietnam vets
- 67% served three or more years
- 33% served in a war zone
- 25% have used VA Homeless Services
- 85% completed high school/GED, compared to 56% of non-veterans
- 89% received an honorable discharge from military service
- 79% reside in central cities
- 16% reside in suburban areas
- 5% reside in rural areas
- 46% are age 45 or older compared to 20% for non-veterans
In addition to the difficulties that lead to homelessness among the general population, veterans also often suffer from lingering service connected disabilities and mental illness, most notably Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, as a result of time spent in war zones. According to the National Coalition for Homeless Veterans, the most effective programs for homeless veterans are local programs designed to provide safe, substance-free housing while veterans get the job training or job placement assistance they need to improve their position. Aid A Veteran. Is supported entirely by public and business donations. From our fundraising efforts at community events, fairs, trade and car shows, and merchants, including local Wal-Mart stores and other high-volume retail stores. At these fundraisers we give donors patriotic memorabilia such as ball caps, car magnets, bracelets, lapel pins, small U.S. flags, etc. We use a 3'x6' table to display these items.
