The Wall

I saw three old soldiers standing at the wall
Two were tracing names, one just stood and bawled
I watched three fragile hands slip into theirs
In quiet solitude, they bowed their heads in prayer
One lost a leg in forty – three
Another went to Normandy
And one survived the march across Bataan
The other three had suffered too,
The loneliness that they’d been through
But they held on to start their lives again
And here they stand together at the Wall
The greatest generation of them all
They’d all be through some hard hard times
They made their plans and changed their minds
And each had lost a son in Viet Nam
And now their grandkids too were called
They watched them go and through it all
They wondered if they’d ever see it end
And here they stand together at the wall
The greatest generation of them all
They gave their all and then gave more
They sent their children off to war
And faith was all they had to keep them strong
And here they stand together at the Wall
The greatest generation of them all

With thanks from a grateful nation
To the greatest generation
Of them all
