More than half the festivals/fairs we've participated in we learned about through word of mouth. They weren't actually posted here. I'm wondering if there are some additional resources for finding them and or networking.

How do I see what other vendors are selling at events?

I see everyone discussing competitions items so you can determine whether to go to event or not, but I cannot figure out how to determine this from 'find events' page.

Girlco Boutique

Inola, Oklahoma Hay days lots of problems

The event said 5000 people. No there were not. The town does not support the event. The carnival was there, but said they would not come back. They shut down due to lack of response on the busy day. The event was ran by one person whom said she would not do this next year. she never got the insurance to open the beer tent. The port a potty's were never cleaned the entire 3 days. Only 20 vendors most said they would not return only the local ones. A few left mid day. Lack of support and poorly ran.

Average Sales?

Is there a resource for finding out what the average sales are for these shows? I am considering going to shows as an exhibitor, but having information around average sales would be great information. It would be better yet to see average sales by category for the various shows. Thanks all!

Charlton Old Home Day

Chairman advertised a 4 day event for Labor Day weekend when in fact was only a one day event on Monday. Furthermore, they lost my application (event though it had also been emailed to the chairman's home email) and check. When we attempted to salvage the weekend and our costs, we were told to 'stay home.' A notice and demand for compensation has been send to the committee and the town, since is a town sponsored event. Will keep you informed, but suggest venders think twice about attending this event in Charlton, MA

Bad management at Louisiana Nursery Festival, Forest Hill, La

I would like to report the treatment I received at the LA Nursery Festival. They sent out a application that stated that you could have your same booth location if you paid on time. I sent in my application and paid in January. They cashed my check in January but did not give me my booth assignment until the Monday before the show started on Thursday, two months after my check was cashed. When I saw that they had moved my booth space I called and complained that they had put me in a space that would not work for my product. I was told that they had added 100 new vendors and I would have to take the spot. I have gone to this show for the last four years and had always had the same spot. I told them that I would try it this year, but I didn't know if I would be back. When I got to the show and went to my area to set up I was told that someone had asked the other vendors to send me to the office. I thought they had worked something out, but when I got to the office they gave me back my money and kicked me out. I was willing to work with them and was prepared to set up and use the spot they had assigned me, but they would not let me. The show is under new management and they do not know what they are doing. They even told me that next year they are not going to assign booth numbers, but they are going to let the vendors just pick their spot when they get there and just set up. That's going to go over really great, 200 vendors all fighting over the best spots.

The Bigdawg and Paul Show

Wild Georgia Shrimp & Grits Festval-Jekyll Island, Georgia

This is an absolute gem of a festival. Not only does southeastern Georgia have some of the best seafood but also some of the best bands are from round them parts! Really great talent. Not to mention some fine craft booths, there are so many things to do on the island it is a great place to dial it down a notch and enjoy! I give this festival and it's organizers a 10+

Fine art/fine craft gallery in Prescott, Az

Hi everyone. I am a fine jewelry artist who has finally decided to quit doing shows all over the country and open a fine art, fine craft gallery in Prescott, Arizona. We get more than 8 million visitors yearly and my store will be right downtown on the square!. I am looking for 20-40 fine artist or fine crafters for my gallery. Price will be $350 a month plus 10% with a minium of 6 months. I have spoken to a lot of artist and they like this idea. The store will be open a minium of 6 days per week, have extensive advertising. Even the visitors buurea have indicated I can advertise on their site, which is international. I plan on turning this into the place to go in Prescott, Arizona. This will help get your product out in the public eye for basically the cost of one show per month, without all the travel and lodging expense. I expect it to be slow for the first couple of months but picking up quickly. All artists and crafters will be juried in, no junk allowed, and you must make your items yourself. If I have doubts I will want proof. Once or twice a month I will have artists days, in which a number of artists can come in, meet and greet, sign autographs, etc. Those events will also be heavily advertised. Leaving ratings

Help is all, if you have done a listed show, please leave a rating. Suggestions: Rate what you see, not what you hear. Info on the following is very helpful. How is the set up tear down - food and art/craft - on grass, asphalt,concrete? What is the crowd like - young old, eaters, drinkers, buying, looking etc. How are the promoters - selling real estate, concerned, helpful, honest etc. Are the fees reasonable for the return. Do you have what is needed readily available - electric, water, etc. Is the show in one area or spread all over the place. If sales were down, what to you attribute that to - weather,economy of the area? Any potential or actual problems you can see? The more information, the better for all of us.

New Unique store opening in Fairview Hgts vendors with handmade items needed

My name is Julie Michael. My sister Leslie Anderson is opening up a craft and antique store in Fairview Hgts. She is currently seeking vendors of handmade unique items. This will not be like the typical craft store with booths, but items mixed throughout the store to make it more appealing for consumers. If you are familiar with the store The Rusty Nail Crafts and Antique store in Salem IL, that is the set up she is going with. Leslie and I both sell at the Rusty Nail and have done very well and our sales in that store have continued to grow each year The Belleville Fairview Hgts area does not have a store like this, so it is sure to have appeal. Vendors will not be allowed to bring in wholesale items so that will definitely be a bonus for the vendors not to be competing with wholesale prices. Is anyone doing the Tazewell County Fair, in Tazewell, VA

Hi, I'm suppose to do this fair-BUT i just looked at the weather for that city and they will have thunderstorms the entire week. I"m at a lost on should I go or not considering i'll be traveling about 13 hrs to get to this event. I was counting on this event to do other events in the area. I have sent e-mails, phone calls and even dropped off an info packet at the park office but Mike Burke the show promotor won't return calls or e-mails. This event is in my town and I can't get a response from the promotor. Has anyone else had problems with this event?

Event debacles are Bad News: Don't bite the volunteers

An event not listed on this fine website contacted me via another source that apparently does not have an open rating system. I love the numerical rating box & information when searching shows that is provided on FNO. Anyway I had done the Dallas CityArts show last year, when is was outside, and thought it good enough to try again. This year is was inside at Fair Park. It was the defining model for a cluster-Uhhh messup. The promoter blamed the city for not advertising and the city returned the blame. Their cute little sign at one entrance was hard to see a few feet away, but then I do need a new eye exam. I thought it a fine time to get some work done and have long chats with old artists friends. But spilled some thin runny chili on my pants, from a chilidog, when an irate artist almost attacked the Dallas 500 volunteers in the hospitality room. He was expelled yelling, "Class Action Lawsuit"…whew. Also, try as I may, I could not swallow $300 worth of bread & peanut butter to make up for the booth fee. It does make me angry to think of some promotion company laughing all the way to the bank… there were three hundred artists and some with 2 or 3 booth spots. At $300 a single space someone mad a tidy sum. So if anyone knows where to get cheep tar and chicken feathers, we might have a fun time, but leave the poor volunteers alone. Thay are dupes and suckers just like the rest of us when a promoter goes bad. Once again FNO has my heartfelt gratitude for their 'rate this show' system, wish everyone did!

Recommended Shows for Rest of 2010

I'm rather new to the craft show business and not yet terribly familiar with a lot of the shows. Would appreciate some help. I'm looking for good shows in July, Sept., Nov. & Dec. that are possibly not yet past the deadline. I'm based in Texas and am willing to drive 600-800 miles for a 3-4 day show that is well-attended and is receptive to fine-crafts. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Artist/Vendor contact

This pertains to the ratings for the most part. When I view a show that has ratings and see that a vendor had a problem with the promoter or something more. Many times I would like to contact that person directly about that particular show. I would like to see festivalnet provide this option in the rating box. There should be a way to have an option, when you leave a rating, to let other vendors contact you. A way that would not cause problems with the show promoter. I think they are working on this, but if this interests you as well, let them know. I have been dealing with festivalnet.com for many years and they are always willing to listed to ideas, even bad ones.

We do many (very) small (very) local festivals that do not list on festivalnet.com. For these unlisted festivals I've started running a quick blog on our festivalnet.com website to help other vendors. Of course, some crafts work better at some festivals than at others. We try to concentrate our time and money on medieval faires, renaissance faires, and Scottish games-type festivals. Suggestion for "finding shows" page

Here's a suggestion for "finding shows" page - show only shows which run for ....days minimum! For travelling vendors like myself it makes sense to book long-lasting shows only, and if I check by attandance, it still works, but I'd rather to have less people but longer show.

Taking orders

New to this. We make handcrafted wood & acrylic pens and scroll-sawed signs. We have the ability to personalize by engraving. How successful do you think the engraving aspect will be when we'll have to take orders and ship the final product back to the customer? Are customers willing to place orders or do we need to find a way to take our computer and engraver to the craft shows?

Many years ago, I used to do shows & I found that unless you know a show is worthwhile, you can lose $$ or just break even with the entry fees, motel, gas, etc. I was surprised at how few of the shows were rated and how old the ratings were. Why don't more crafters write about the shows?? Also, I think it would be helpful if you knew what athe artist was selling---sometimes shows are good for some crafts, but not others.
