Pyrography Great Wave Off Kanagawa
One of a Kind
The Great Wave Off Kanagawa by Japanese ukiyo-e artist Hokusai is one of the best recognized works of Japanese art in the world, and one of my personal favorites.
I made this reproduction of the iconic image in pyrography on maple. This piece is entirely crafted by hand, including the frame. I sanded the maple to 600 grit, then drew and wood burned the image into the wood using the same wood burning tool available in any craft store. It then received a 2-step finish, starting with 100% pure tung oil to bring out the figure of the maple wood, then an orange oil and beeswax finish to seal the surface.
The maple is set about 1/8 of an inch from the highest part of the frame, making it stand out from the wall. The frame is red oak, custom-cut for this piece, which has been affixed to the frame. After cutting, sanding and assembly, the red oak received a walnut stain to accentuate the pyrography. The back features a keyhole hanger cut into the frame. This art piece will hang level and flush to the wall on any screw or nail.
Its simple beauty echoes the beauty of ancient Japan in humble homage to the original. Add it to your cart today as a gift for a special friend or loved one or as a special treat for yourself!
