This blue fish placemat is hand-painted by artists in Zimbabwe using the sadza technique of batik. It meaaures 15.5 by 12.5 inches excluding fringe, and has a light blue dyed cotton back.
Sadza is a grain meal porridge that is the staple food of Zimbabwe. The sadza is made into a paste and put in squeeze bottles. The artists use the bottles to make patterns on textured cotton fabric, which is then sundried. The artisans then paint the fabric, and heat it several times to reinforce the color. When dry, the sadza is scraped off and used in gardens. The design remains, and the result is a high-quality textile with a crackle effect and permanent color.
Recommended washing instructions: hand wash or a delicate cycle, and air dry.
Purchase of these products helps support Tonga Textiles, a family-run Fair Trade company. They train and employ men and women from the community, thus empowering the artisans to work for themselves and help alleviate poverty.
