Peter and his wife, along with their four-year old daughter and two-year old son, defected from behind the Iron Curtain of Communist Czechoslovakia. In the middle of a cold, rainy night, they ran for their lives across the border from Communist Yugoslavia to western Austria while being chased by guards with automatic weapons.

They spent ten years planning their escape. They had not told their families of their plan, and left them and everything they owned behind. This was their way to protect their families from the wrath of the government, which they knew would follow if they were successful. If Peter and his wife would have been captured alive, they would have been sentenced to years in a hard-labor, Gulag-like work camp, along with other innocent people and common criminals. Their children would have been taken and raised in government run institutions. Since they would have been labeled as political criminals, they may not be allowed to see thier children again.

This story is based on real ife events experienced by Peter Vodenka and his family living their lives under Communist rule. It describes in vivid detail their journey for freedom to America.
