History
My dad (Poppi's dad, affectionately known as “Papa”) loved anything hot. The hotter the better. We used to tease him that he liked hot things so much that he probably put pepper flakes on his cold cereal (he didn't... well, at least I don't think he did... hmmm... now I'm wondering...). I've always loved hot sauce, too. But not killer-hot like my dad. Plus, I only make recipes that have lots of flavor. One of the problems most people have when they cook, is not enough spice. Most people typically put a dab of this or that. It takes a lot of spice to make killer dishes.
One day, about 40 years ago, I was eating at a favorite gourmet sandwich restaurant in Maryland. With my order came one of the hottest and tastiest sauces I have ever had. So I bought a bottle to take to my dad. When I got home, I put a whole bunch of that sauce on a large tablespoon and took it into my dad's office to see if I could burn his face off (nice guy, right?). Fortunately for him, he was a smart guy. As I tried to shove it in his mouth while telling him I found a great hot sauce, he took the spoon from me and tasted just a touch to his tongue—“Ooooo—that is hot!” he bellowed. It became a household favorite.
Since then, I've always looked for good tasting hot sauces to have my dad try. I did a lot of world traveling for my job and tried hot sauces from all sorts of places. Years later, as my desire and skill for cooking developed, I decided it was time to create my own signature sauce to give to my kids, family, and friends at Christmas. Then, during the pandemic of 2020, Dustin—one of my sons who is a farmer—asked if he could make and sell that signature sauce. And the rest, as they say, is history. With lots of additions to the main sauce line, Poppi's Hot Sauce has become a favorite of many hot sauce lovers. Hopefully, it will become one of your favorites, too. The peppers are grown naturally here in Virginia (about 98% on our farm), and all the sauce is made by us right here. We look forward to serving you some great sauce in the days and years to come.
