The Acworth-Cobb Dragon Boat Festival, Inc., a 501(c) 3 nonprofit, raises funds for cancer outreach programs in the local area. Last year's proceeds benefited Loving Arms Cancer Outreach and Camp Sunshine. Over the years, the festival has raised approximately $45,000 for cancer outreach programs. These include Loving Arms, founded by two oncology nurses, Dragon Boat Atlanta, a breast cancer team, and Camp Sunshine. This year's festival takes place on Saturday, May 4, 2024, at Dallas Landing Park in Acworth, Georgia.
Imagine gliding across the water in a 46 ft boat with 20 of your family, friends, or co-workers. These boats have a dragon head and tail, along with a steersperson to help you stay on course and a drummer at the front maintaining the beat. You will be competing in a high energy dragon boat race on the water. This athletic and cultural phenomenon originated over 2000 years ago in ancient China and is presently the fastest growing sport in the world and was introduced as a demonstration event during the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.
The festival is a great team building opportunity and fun-filled day on the water. What a great time for your young adult class, neighborhood, office, or family and friends to come together. Teams bring their tent, make their team shirts and dress up their drummer. Each team competes in two race heats in the morning and one in the afternoon. Each heat is about 250 meters and takes between 2 and 2 ½ minutes. No training necessary. We do offer a one-hour practice session on either the Thursday or Friday before the event.
