I started my shop unexpectedly. I became a full-time stay-at-homer after my first child was born. Of course, once my husband and I committed to that, the economy went South and so did my husband's line of work in upscale home renovations and cabinetry. So, we tightened our belts and I began purging the house and selling on online. My first etsy shop included vintage items I had collected through the years, some BW fine art photographs I shot with a Holga camera, and hand-embroidered bodysuits (an obsession I had begun while making special ones for my son).
The Bird & Ele is an ever-evolving brand of baby toys, gear and clothing, including organics and non-organics, both of which are of high quality. I have so many ideas that I can't wait to try out, and I am ever inspired by the fabrics I see.
I come from a long line of artisans and crafters, canners and quilters, wood crafters and mule breeders. My memories of those sweet smelling preserves, the home-baked breads, the clink of wooden blocks and the warmth of a solid pathwork quilt are so ingrained that I'm beginning to carry on (learn) the traditions so my children, and husband, will be able to taste real food and feel the love from hand sewn gifts. I guess you can say I'm a self-taught artist, crafter, jewelry maker, baker, as I've stumbled through every process known to get to where I am today. I pursued a formal education in the arts because there was so much more I wanted to learn and decided that a guided tour might be more beneficial, and I think I discovered a bit more about myself, like an exploration into understanding me and how to hone in on a style/aesthetic.
I'm accustomed to quality goods, which I term handmade, because although the materials might come from the same place as the store bought, mass-produced, finished ones, the love that is put into the handmade adds a bit more to the treasury of comfort, quality and beauty.
