I don't remember playing with mud when I was a small child, having spent the first five years of my life living in an apartment in Brooklyn, but some latent need to play with mud clearly has remained with me all these years. I gave into my urge to play with mud my sophomore year in college when I took a weekend class on throwing and used my five pounds of clay continuously until it was so wet it ended up in the recycle bucket. I was hooked. I have always dreamed that one day, I would learn to throw pots and eventually fill my cabinets with the pottery I created.
I spent the next 40 years as a teacher and school principal doing what I could to make the lives of the children in my charge easier and richer. Always trying to find my inner artist, I dabbled in crafts of all kinds, including quilting, and while I enjoy creating colorful designs in a quilt, it just did not fill the need that I now know is my calling.
My big break to realizing my dream of becoming a potter came two years ago when my family gave me a gift of 10 pottery lessons and the rest is history. I have continued to take lessons, but more importantly I have joined a pottery studio where I can spend all the time I want experimenting with clay and glazes. I continue to remain awestruck at all the possibilities that lie within a lump of clay.
