Creations in Wood, Kankakee, IL
Intarsia is the art of making pictures with wood. I started working with wood about 10 years ago, and have been covered in sawdust ever since! I've studied under the foremost Intarsia artist in the United States, and the first woman admitted into the Woodworkers Hall of Fame, Judy Gale Roberts.
The process starts with ordinary lumber. Some of it domestic, and some colorful hardwoods that come from all over the world. I cut the individual pieces out according to the direction of the grain, and the color that I need. No paints or stains are used. The colors are all natural. Once cut, I head to the flex drum sander for shaping and contouring. Then lots of hand sanding. The pieces are then glued to a backing board, and a finish is applied.
I live in Kankakee, Illinois with my husband Greg. We have four beautiful daughters and four incredible grandchildren.
