Thank God for Rain

posted September 29, 2013
Thank God for Rain
Well, we were blessed with rain a couple of weeks ago after suffering severe drought for several years. We got in excess of 4 inches in 36 hours here at our home northeast of Dexter. We live just a mile east of the Pecos River, which rarely has more than a trickle of water in it, so to call it a river is somewhat comical. However, after all the accumulated rain that eastern New Mexico received in such a short period of time the Pecos overflowed its banks and flood waters covered much of our gravel road by 2 feet in some places.

We are dryed out now with the exception of a few ponds that were never there before. It is amazing to me how quickly weeds can grow. I had to get out this morning to cut weeds that had sprung up over night it seems.

This bracelet made of copper reminds me of the drought and how bad we needed the rain. There is always beauty in everything we see, we just have to look for it!

A Desert Pond

posted August 7, 2013
A Desert Pond
One thing about retirement that I always looked forward to was getting up in the morning when I wanted to. Well here we are at retirement and I can't seem to sleep past 5:30. I am out on the deck overlooking the pond, drinking my coffee a...nd enjoying the cool quiet morning. I love how the birds start waking up around me singing their good mornings to each other. First on the south side of the pond, then the reply comes from the north side. The morning dove join in, then the quail. Before you realize, a hummingbird starts buzzing around and the different birds that call my desert pond "home", begin their morning rituals, just as the sun is coming up. I wouldn't miss it! The mama and papa quail bring their 12 or so baby chicks to the pond for a drink of water. One baby almost falls in. I thought I was going to have to perform a rescue mission. King birds, Orioles, Western Tanagers, and occasionally the Painted Bunting all surround, drink and bathe in our desert pond. The Fly Catcher and the Common Yellowthroat dip over the pond catching insects.

This bracelet was inspired by the Yellowthroat that flits around in the trees every spring and summer. Go to www.etsy.com/shop/desertpondstudios to see other designs by Yours Truly.

22 Caliber Rifle Casing Jewelry
There is nothing like beautiful earrings to make you feel like you are at the top of your game.

I have designed these earrings using upcycled 22 caliber rifle casings, colorful beads, and chain. Simply drill a hole in the top of the casing. Attach beads and chain using basic wire wrap methods and incorporate ear wires. Voila!

You can see these and other upcycled jewelry here....
