Dionne M. Laffoon/Omilabu Studios
Omilabu Studios got its name from my marriage to Michael Adeniyi Omilabu a world beat musician who plays the lead guitar and precussion beautifully as it seeps into your soul and really makes you want to sing and dance.
Omilabu, a Nigerian name that means waters run deep, fits the studio I have created as it is in the heart of the fishbowl (a 20 year flood zone in Martinez, CA). The fishbowl is Martinez's flood zone area and the protection zone of the beaver, not to mention that water is my favorite element first and foremost. I love to swim, drink and watch the movement of water.
Martinez is lined with gardners, artisians, craft persons and more. Everything gows in Martinez; plants, vegetables, fruits, creative energy.
On my walks, I love to return with ideas, natural objects and plant life to sketch and paint. I began painting birdhouses as I became attracted to the whimsical gardens and the wildlife that find their home here.
The medium of my choice are oils, watercolor, pencil and an array of natural objects.
I graduated from Mills College in Studio Arts and Art History, studing ceramics with Ron Nagle, painting and drawing with Hung Lui and sculpture with Anna Valentine Murch. I stuided botanical sketch under Dorcus Moulton at Merritt College.
The world is my canvass, the sky my thoughts and the universe holds all of my ideas
