Jewels by Penny is a one-person artisan and was founded in 2008.
I started out making earrings for myself, then necklaces and bracelets. I proceeded to make jewelry for my family and relatives.
In late 2007 I became ill and was told that I could no longer work. I continued to design and create jewelry. Everything I have learned is self-taught and through books and videos. In 2008 I decided to extend my passion for jewelry and founded Jewels by Penny.
The pieces of jewelry on this site are designed and carefully handcrafted by me, making each piece unique. I have learned different styles of making jewelry including chain maille. All my jewelry is handcrafted here in the United States using the best materials available.
Since then, I have received requests for customized pieces and have incorporated some into my site.
The majority of my work is in copper. I only use 99.9% pure copper wire.
I make my own jump rings which are hand coiled and saw cut.
Other wire metals I use are:
Brass - it is a lead-free brass and consists of 70% copper and 30% zinc.
Silver Plated - it is composed of pure copper wire plated with 99.9% silver with a backed-on clear coating to prevent tarnishing.
Gold-Tone - it consists of 85% copper and 15% zinc.
Bright Aluminum - it is clean, shiny, and light. It is hard-tempered aluminum and a good alloy to give it good strength.
Anodized Aluminum - These are colored jump rings. It is hard-tempered aluminum which is stronger than annealed steel or colored copper. I use these mainly to add color to my chain mail jewelry pieces.
Stainless Steel - this type of metal does not rust. It is a strong and clean metal.
