Julia Tygel - Pianist and Composer, Brooklyn, NY
Julia Tygel is a young Brazilian pianist and composer. She grew up in Campinas/SP, a city near Sao Paulo, beginning her piano practice at 7 years old. She graduated in Music/Composition at the State University of Campinas (UNICAMP), where she also concluded the Master degree in Ethnomusicology in 2009. Now she does her doctoral studies at São Paulo University (USP) in Music and is at the City University of New York as a visiting research scholar with a Fulbright grant.
She recently recorded her first CD – “Julia Tygel – Entremeados”, with financial support of the prefecture of her home city in Brazil. It presents her arrangements for Brazilian songs, including composers like Tom Jobim, Chico Buarque and Edu Lobo, and compositions in majority for piano and cello duo, produced by Benjamim Taubkin (Brazil).
Her compositions and arrangements mix the influences of the classical musical education with the rich Brazilian popular music. She has been recently playing this repertory at important rooms dedicated to instrumental music in Sao Paulo, where she is being recognized as a talented musician of her generation.
