Hawaiian Limpet ("Opihi")

Patella Sandwichensis Pease.

The Opihi shell is found only in Hawaii. It is attached to coral or rock in the tidal areas and must be harvested with great care.

I was born and raised in Hawaii and lived off the ocean for many years. I now live in the Blue Ridge Valley of Virginia.

My brother in Hawaii sends me the shells and I work with them until their true beauty is revealed. Like snowflakes, no two are ever alike and it is very interesting to see what each one will develop into. I try to bring out each shells own unique and individual colors and characteristics.

As a born again Christian I am very thankful to God for helping me to work with His creation.  My special interest is in the design of the Cross which means so much to me.

We were participants at the Sanibel Captiva Rotary Arts and Crafts fair on February 13 & 14, 2010. Our art showcases the unique one-of-a-kind Opihi (Hawaiian Limpet) shell from  Hawaii (mostly pendants). We enjoyed many compliments from our customers and this particular medium was very well received in the Sanibel area. I felt honored, yet humbled, to be part of this Arts & Crafts fair with so much other talent there.

If only you can see them in person, the countless "wow", compliments and conversations they have brought at the shows I have attended.

I invite you to view my work, and welcome your feedback.

Aloha and God Bless, Keoni Von Makai
