This journey began when my husband and I asked ourselves one question. "What are we breathing in when we light candles?" Just like many women, I love a nice smelling house. It makes you feel good and everyone loves the light dim glow of a candle. I had candles in every room always aglow. Then, we did some research and this is what we found out about those store bought candles...
Most candles that are bought in stores today are made of paraffin. Paraffin is made from the sludge at the bottom of barrels of crude oil which is then treated and bleached with benzene then other chemical solvents to "clean it up" for use in candles. Paraffin candles put out soot and smoke when you burn them along with toxins and carcinogens.
Since burning petrochemical paraffin smells bad, synthetic fragrance oils are added, many of which are irritating and even toxic themselves when they're burned. Also, the soot, smoke, and chemical residue from these candles can stick to walls, ceilings, and ventilation ducts. The air then gets re-circulated whenever the heating/cooling system is in action, exposing you to the pollutants even when the paraffin candles aren't burning.
But, we found a solution....
Beeswax candles don't cause any of the problems paraffin candles do. Burning beeswax produces negative ions. Negative ions are natures air purifiers. They clean the air of dust, mold, bacteria, viruses, and other pollutants! Some studies even reported significant improvements in homes where individuals suffered from allergy and sinus problems, and in some mild cases of asthma.
