My first gourd piece? A yarn bowl for my mother for Christmas 2016. Funny story..... Had the idea to buy her one, looked on Etsy and saw one made from a gourd and I thought "Maybe I could do that"! Called my mom and asked her if she still had some dried gourds in her basement (she likes to paint and decoupage them). She said "yes. Why?" And I said "Nevermind why, I'm on my way to get one" and the rest as they say is history! I grabbed the biggest one she had, it needed to be a yarn bowl after all, took it home and watched a few hours of YouTube. Hunted the house for that Dremel I knew I had somewhere and once I finally found it I started cutting, and painting. I was hooked!
My whole life I have practiced art in some form or another. I'm even a designer in my work life. But this... gourd, this awkward, hard shelled thing that like a snow flake there are never two alike - that is truly a gift from mother nature is my perfect medium. I can't begin to describe the joy I feel when I'm holding a gourd, feeling it, rolling it around in my arms. I let the gourd speak to me and tell me what it wants to be in it's new forever life. Once it tells me all it's secrets I start my new creation......
