High fire ceramic functional and sculptural ware with Macro-Crystalline glazes.
In 2009 I signed up for my first ceramics class at Community College of Allegheny County. I quickly found that I had a great passion for pottery. I purchased my first kiln from my professor, a used Skutt Electric Kiln. When I signed up for Ceramics 2 we were given a choice to pursue either hand building or throwing. I chose to focus on hand building. At the end of my second ceramics course I realised store bought glazes were not for me, so I began to purchase glaze ingredients that were germane to the recipes I wanted to try. I saw many images of Macro Crystalline Glazes and started to read everything I could find on the subject. It became apparent that my Skutt manual kiln sitter kiln would not be very helpful in firing crystalline glazes. I bought my second kiln, a Skutt 1027 KM kiln with the ability to program and fire 8 segmented firing schedules.
