Welcome to Yard By Yard Knits! I'm Sarah, the woman behind the knitting. My friend, Katie, showed me how to knit on numerous college vacations, but I never made more than a little swatch. In 2005, I decided it was time for a hobby. Another friend was knitting socks one night when I was at her house. She gave me a lesson and sent me home with yarn, needles, and instructions to practice! Always an overachiever, I decided I would make this friend a scarf with her yarn. But I wasn't going to start off with garter stitch or stockinette stitch. I was going for a little pattern, so I picked moss stitch. That doesn't sound so hard for novice knitters, but when you can't yet read a knit stitch from a purl stitch, it makes for a very interesting project! I don't recommend new knitters follow my beginnings! I also don't recommend knitting your first scarf with baby yarn - it takes forever!
But after this first scarf, I was hooked. I quickly moved on to baby blankets for an extra challenge. Luckily, my expert knitting friend (Katie) had moved back to town, so she helped me with all my questions, and I did indeed knit two baby blankets.
You might ask, why such an odd assortment of merchandise? Simple answer: it's what I like to knit! Maybe I like the gratification of finishing a project too much to make adult-sized sweaters that take longer to make. Plus, the pet clothing is so darn cute! I don't even own a dog, but I will admit I am tempted to try some of the dog sweaters on my cat just to see how they look. She's very grateful that I have not given into that temptation.
I love trying new patterns and projects as well as experimenting with new yarns on familiar patterns. I'm drawn to textures and vibrant colors, as you can tell from my shop. I won't admit to how much spare time is spent knitting, but I can say I feel way too bored and unproductive watching television without a project to work on.
