The Cumberland County Patriot Day Festival is a fun-filled day for the whole family, and did I mention FREE? The Festival honors Cumberland County's First Call for American Independence made by Carter Henry Harrison on April 22, 1776 from the steps of Effingham Tavern across from the Cumberland Courthouse. Mr. Harrison instructed delegates of Cumberland to vote for independence from the British government at the Virginia Convention of May 6, 1776. This was the First Call for American Independence issued by a publicly elected govermental body.
