Ailene Vrana MacDougall is a Toronto-born mixed-media abstract artist whose work explores place, memory, and movement through vibrant colour, layered surfaces, and intuitive mark-making. Her practice has evolved from an early interest in architecture and urban imagery into a contemporary abstract language shaped by a lifelong engagement with tactile processes, including textiles, collage, and hand-built surfaces.
Ailene's work is informed by images she collects while travelling—not as photography, but as visual source material. She captures textures, patterns, and fragments of the built environment such as walls, cobblestones, brickwork, and tiles, which are deconstructed and transformed through paint, collage, and layered abstraction. These works form part of her ongoing Worldscapes series, translating lived experience into expressive, nonrepresentational compositions.
After retiring from a career in corporate strategy and franchise ownership, Ailene has spent the past five years fully developing her artistic voice. Her work invites viewers to slow down, engage with surface and colour, and experience place through emotional resonance rather than literal depiction.
