Art Sanctuary uses the power of black art to transform individuals, unite groups of people, and enrich and draw inspiration from our urban community.
In 1998 Art Sanctuary was founded by author and educator Lorene Cary to bring excellent art into the inner city; to connect top artists to the community; and to unite diverse groups through the study and enjoyment of African-American art. We present the annual Celebration of Black Writing festival and other art events along with effective, often intimate, educational programs for learners at all levels. Art Sanctuary has presented more than 500 artists, as popular as novelist Terry McMillan and as avant-garde as dancer-choreographer Bill T. Jones; Cuban folk dancers; French and Wolof-speaking hip-hop artists, Grammy-winners The Roots--artists with national and international impact.
