Barbara Lewis, Chaptico, MD
My degree in ceramics has had a great influence on my jewelry design. Much of my pottery work, and now my jewelry pieces, reflect my interest in Eastern and African design. Nearly every piece of jewelry is enhanced by a jewelry component that has been made by me in my studio, be it a clay, enamel, or lampwork bead or etched metal pendant. By making the jewelry components, I have the maximum artistic expression. Design considerations are of the utmost importance, as are concerns relating to the comfort and functionality of the jewelry piece. Is the clasp functional and easy to close, is the weight appropriate to the piece, is the bracelet balanced to prevent it from turning on the wrist of the wearer are but a few of the questions that must be answered during the design process.
Of the beads that I do not make, I am drawn to African trade, recycled glass and bone beads, and pearls. The beads selected reflect my interest in color and texture. My greatest desire is that the wearer of my jewelry will feel pride of ownership.
