New CD "There Was Never" major reviews:

From Downbeat Magazine, February 2016, Josef Woodard

Dave Wilson Quartet, There Was Never (Zoho 201512; 65:34 +++ 3 stars!) With his fourth album, Dave Wilson, on tenor and soprano saxophones, puts a strong foot forward, backed by a tight and raring-to-go rhythm section of young pianist Bobby Avey, bassist Tony Marino and drummer Alex Ritz. From the tricky, pulsing energy of the opening “The Time Has Come,” on which the saxophonist brandishes his big tone and easily tumbling facility, to the simple folk theme of “On The Prairie,” There Was Never makes a varied and mostly powerful impact.

ALL ABOUT JAZZ DAN BILAWSKY, December 25, 2015

Saxophonist Dave Wilson cuts an imposing figure on the cover of There Was Never, his fourth album in total and his first on the Zoho Music imprint. There's intensity fixed on his face, with eyes closed in concentration and embouchure set for attack. And then there's his tenor saxophone. It has a larger than life presence in the photo. This is the picture of a man on a mission, a leader who knows what he wants, a musician who knows how to handle his horn. The music, thankfully, says the exact same thing(s)....Wilson, a fixture on the Pennsylvania jazz scene, has focused on the quartet format with all of his albums—Through The Time (Self Produced, 2002), My Time (DreamBox Media, 2006), Spiral (Summit Records, 2010), and this engrossing date. But that doesn't mean he's settled on a formula. Quite the contrary, in fact. Wilson is still working things out, trying new things, and altering lineups. He's finding different ways to explore the most familiar of formats and he sounds great doing it. Here, he teams with rising star pianist Bobby Avey, a bold adventurer who dissects harmonies and grooves in unexpected ways; drummer Alex Ritz, a firm yet malleable presence behind the kit; and Tony Marino, a ballasting bassist who happens to be the only holdover from Wilson's previous outing. They make for a strong grouping, a bit more unpredictable and restless than the band that appeared on Spiral....These are protean players who take joy in stretching an idea, but they never completely upend the music. They create squalls and then weather them together...simply further the notion that Dave Wilson is anything but set in his ways. There Was Never is as complete a musical statement as you can come by these days. Dull moments seem to be the only thing missing from this package.

---------------------------------------------------

The Dave Wilson Quartet's CD release 'Spiral' was Top 55 "Chartbound" on Jazz Weekly for 5 weeks in 2010. It received incredible reviews in publications such as Downbeat Magazine and Jazz Times.

From Downbeat Magazine (3 and 1/2 stars):

“With a crack band in pianist Phil Markowitz, bassist Tony Marino and Adam Nussbaum on drums, saxophonist Dave Wilson knows how to pick them and the music...sparked by Wilson's edgy yet loose tenor playing along with vivid comping and soloing by Markowitz, sold support from Marino and sensitive yet fiery playing from the always reliable Nussbaum...indicates a band comfort level both wide and deep.”

From Jazz Times:
"With stellar support from Pianist Phil Markowitz, Bassist Tony Marino, and drummer Adam Nussbaum, Pennsylvania-based saxophonist-educator Dave Wilson elevates his game and blows with authority on this collection of originals and smartly plucked covers. From the aggressive title track (with Wilson channeling his inner Trane on tenor) to the soothing bossa nova “Ocean Blue”, the expansive modal number “Movin' On” and an intriguing variation on Scott LaFaro's “Gloria's Step” (titled “Like GS Step 2”) the saxophonist showcases a bold sound, fertile ideas, and fluid lines."

Thanks very much for your time and consideration. I look forward to hearing from you, and please let me know if there is any other information you need, or if you experience any difficulty accessing any of the content. Please feel free to call me anytime, or shoot me some potential date options, as I'd love to secure a date for the ensemble.

The Rampart Street Ramblers (Traditional/New Orleans/Dixieland Jazz)

The Rampart Street Ramblers Bio:

The Rampart Street Ramblers takes its name from that legendary street in old New Orleans upon which jazz music originated, once flourished, and still carries on its grand glory today. The group carries on the tradition of the original, Traditional New Orleans style of Dixieland jazz music. Founded some years ago by the well-known jazz clarinet and saxophone stylist Dave Wilson, the Rampart Street Ramblers are comprised of only the very best exponents of this music, kind of like a top notch all-star group of “Traditional” music players (on trumpet, trombone, clarinet & saxophones, piano or banjo, bass or tuba) from Central Pennsylvania and beyond.

Our regular lineup includes now Ben Mauger or Todd Fulginitti (Trumpet and Cornet); Dave Wilson (Clarinet, Soprano, Alto, Tenor, C-Melody Saxophones); Bob Peruzzi (Trombone); Bob Kreitz or Dave Winter (Piano); Tom Hilliker (Acoustic Bass), and Doug Kulp or Dave Santana (Drums)

As the Rampart Street Ramblers or as its previous incarnation, The Canal Street Hot 6, members have performed at the Hot Steamed Jazz Festival in CT, Suncoast Jazz Society in Clearwater, Fla, People's Choice Music Festival in State College, PA, Camden Yards for Baseball's Baltimore Orioles, The Tri-State Jazz Society in Philadelphia, The Pennsylvania Jazz Society and the Bethlehem PA Musikfest to name just a few, along with local venues such as the Mount Joy, Mountville, Donegal Springs, Coleman Park in Lebanon and Springettsbury, York summer concert series.

Dixieland jazz music is characterized by its bright, happy, uplifting nature. It is music for the people; it is accessible to everyone. And it has a real patriotic flavor, because of its very nature, and because, after all, jazz music is one of America's few true indigenous art forms. The Rampart Street Ramblers look forward to a long career in the music, and hope to meet each and every one of you at any one of its exciting venues coming up in the future. Find out about the Rampart Street Ramblers performance schedule at the Upcoming Performances page on our website davewilsonmusic.org and more about the group (with some video excerpts) specifically at http://davewilsonmusic.org/projects.html.

The Happy Wanderers German Band

We have an excellent, authentic German Music group (with full German attire including Lederhosen) called the Happy Wanderers. The Happy Wanderers is a set lineup made up of: Dave Wilson (Saxophone, Clarinet, Vocals); Todd Fulginitti (Cornet, Vocals); Gary Peters (Tuba); Tom Montgomery (Accordian); with the addition, for 5 pieces of Larry Bortz on Drums. Sometimes described as an “Oom-Pah” band; the group plays generally popular German songs of the day and does so in a friendly, sometimes humorous manor, with banter and encouraging sing-a-longs when appropriate. The group very active enough especially in the fall, around the time of various Octoberfest. In 2018 this group has appeared (so far) at the following events:

Carlisle Heritage and Education Center (Army College): 4 days: 10/4-10/7

Willow Valley Manor (Community)

Willow Valley Manor North

Willow Valley Community Wide Octoberfest

American Legion Post #272, Harrisburg PA Octoberfest

Hershey Tanger Outlet Octoberfest

Hershey Lodge and Convention Center

It has also appeared in the past at private functions and theme parks including Kitchen Kettle Village, Intercourse, PA.

You can read about this group and hear excerpts (along with the various Dave Wilson Duo, Trio, Quartet groups) on our web site at http://davewilsonmusic.org/projects.html.
