Theresa Eisenbarth is an artist based in Medicine Hat, Alberta, Canada. Deeply connected to the prairie landscape, she is passionate about capturing the essence of small-town life and the stories embedded in familiar places. Her work revolves around three central themes: prairie landscapes, small towns and neighbourhoods. She loves painting these memories and stories where we all find mutual connections. Remembering long summer roads, strong vertical telephone poles intersecting with the horizon and stretching into the distance of the call to come home, and small-town neighbourhoods with those often overlooked spaces—back alleys, front yards, and rural gardens.
Theresa studied Visual Communications and Fine Arts at Medicine Hat College before earning her B.F.A. from the University of Calgary. Over the past decade, she has continued to refine her craft, studying under renowned artists and pushing the boundaries of acrylic painting through rich layering and glazing techniques.
A defining element in her work is a key, subtly embedded within each piece. This symbol represents unlocking stories, transitions, and liminal spaces—the in-between past and present moments, inside and outside, belonging and searching. The key is sometimes hidden within the textures of her paintings, tucked into buildings or trees, while other times it remains exposed, evoking a sense of vulnerability. It invites viewers to engage in a quiet discovery, deepening their connection to the piece.
Theresa's ability to blend contemporary life with a deep sense of history and meaning gives her artwork a unique depth—transforming prairie landscapes, family homes, and everyday scenes into vibrant narratives of place and memory. She seeks to provide a fresh perspective on the places we call home, reflecting both personal histories and shared experiences.
Her work has been recognized in numerous exhibitions, and one of her large-scale paintings was recently acquired by the City of Medicine Hat Art Collection. She has been featured in several local publications and was the subject of the documentary Walking the Flats, produced by Bamboo Shoots and available on Telus TV.
Theresa continues to explore the evolving meaning of "home" through her art, residing part-time in Saskatchewan while maintaining her studio in Medicine Hat.
