Hedy Herrera, New York, NEW YORK
Freelance artist
I make art, use paint, collage, drawing, printing just to make art. I started to draw at 6 years old and in all of my different stages of my life and career have brought art into it.
Sometimes illustrator, sometimes portraiture, other time social and printing political posters, participated in community murals, and even home decorating.
As a first generation immigrant, I navigated college half blindly and holding a job. I didn't know where to go after graduating from Art School in California. I had no mentors or family to show me the way to become a full time artist, after a while of freelancing, I was recruited to teach because of my bilingualism. I used the curriculum as a skeleton to attach all subjects creatively using art as the glue for overcoming language and learning barriers. That was my first studio with 20 collaborators.
For 20 plus years, I created lessons that were kid friendly turning their world upside down, in an effort to have them explore and awaken their curiosity. Discover by making, creating and painting on the floor, the walls, etc.
Once I retired from teaching, it was just me and my art materials. It has been a long journey re discovering my own purpose. The children's energy was gone and had to pick up where I left off
i decided that while I figure things out I should “just paint”
Now I want to show and share what I do, just painting.
