Inside the grain. James Mcclain Wood Artist. I am a lifetime resident of Wichita Falls, Texas. I have no formal training in art, have always enjoyed creating items in wood and metal. I worked as a metal worker and as a code welder and pipe welder until a few years ago when disability from my trip to Asia affected my health too much for me to continue working. I do mostly segmented turnings but I do still enjoy Intarsia wood design. Segmented turning is a process where several joined pieces , are turned on a wood lathe. Individual pieces are cut and glued together to create designs or other effects in the finished projects. Using various types of wood as a mediam, I produce a variety of patterns and differ net shapes. There are traditional segmented turning bowl blanks, Open segmented turning. Some of these are face grain an some are end grain they both creat a different pattern. I also do Intarsia a form of wood inlaying sections of wood fitted together to create a mosaic like picture with an illusion of depth. Using different types and colors of wood. I have shown my work at the Kemp Center, Wichita Falls Art Association, Midwestern State University, Ardmore Oklahoma, Sulphur Oklahoma, Artists of the Arbuckles, Veterans creative Art Festival Oklahoma City, Lubbock Art Festival.
