“My favorite part is starting. There is nothing better than a fresh white canvas, clean sheet of paper, or a brand-new sketchbook.” – J. Chapman
A passion for creating rooted in her childhood, and fostered by her mother (also an oil painter), Jessica Chapman finds her purpose in art. An oil painter foremost, she continually pushes herself to try new mediums and styles, recently delving into printmaking. Chapman draws inspiration from her surroundings. Her work largely explores natural things, from the outdoors to the female form. Monochromatic tones and strong contrasts are prominent in her pieces, along with bold colors. Her draw to aesthetically pleasing things, and strong appreciation for the brush strokes of Van Gogh are eminent in her work. She strives to evoke a strong emotion from the viewer, and gives them freedom to explore those emotions by downplaying her own.
Jessica's artwork can be found hanging in local businesses and at her Alma Mater Southwest Minnesota State University. She also displays and sells her work through Etsy and her website.
Chapman has a B.S. in Art Education K-12, and a B.A. in Fine Art (with an Emphasis in Studio Art) from Southwest Minnesota State University.
Jessica lives in Rapid City with her fiancé and their two dogs. She tries to spend as much time as possible in her home studio creating and experimenting. You can also find her substitute teaching in Rapid City, watching Minnesota Twins Baseball and exploring the beauty of the Black Hills.
