Holiday Happenings

posted December 8, 2013   category » Christmas
It's that time of year when we start to see the colored lights on shrubs and rooflines, and doorbuster flyers are stuffed in our mailboxes.  It is the world calling out "rush around and do more" to make everyone happy!  Buy, buy, buy to really have a wonderful holiday!  Me, I must be going deaf, because I just don't hear it anymore.  The older I get, the more I desire quiet, family, and spending time rather than money, for the people I love.
This year, our little country church out in the woods, is putting together shoebox gifts for the residents of a local nursing home.  We are very excited and having a wonderful time wrapping and stuffing each box with little things we hope each resident will enjoy.  Socks, large print puzzle books, magnifiers, stationery, lotions, nail polish, etc.  We will pray over the boxes before we deliver them, so that each person gets what they want or need.  Each also has a Bible verse inside that we hope says exactly what that recipient needs for some comfort.  This event will be the highlight of my Christmas this year.  It will likely be remembered more than any other "gift" I might receive.  I can't imagine what it must be like to live in a nursing home, and hope I never have to know.  I am sure there are a few folks who don't mind, but the majority, I am sure would rather be in their own homes.
I lost my Dad to cancer in October this year.  He was 81, I was blessed to be able to spend time with him at his home before he passed.  Right now, my 77 year old mom stays with us during the winter months, and our 75 year old cousin is here with us now too.  It's not always "cheerful" but we feel for us, it's the right thing to do, for as long as we are able.    We feel blessed that we are able to do this for them.  Not everyone can.  It is a gift to us to spend these years with them. And again, will be remembered dearly, far above and beyond any gift picked up at a Christmas sale.
Our best wishes to everyone for a blessed and safe holiday season and a Christmas that you will remember because of those who shared it with you!!
