Kim Heath

Metal Art Designs

Kim Heath sculpts dramatic, 3-D, one-of-kind wall sculptures out of carbon steel, copper and stained glass.  He individually designs, free flow cuts, shapes, welds and colors each sculpture as envisioned in his imagination.  Using a only a torch as his paintbrush, Kim brings out brilliant colors of the steel by using varying degrees of heat.  No chemicals or dyes are used.  “The challenge is to find just the right temperature to get the color I want.  I like to make my pieces come alive by using the changing light, the metal’s natural colors and the techniques I use.”  Depending on the sculpture, Kim may add lights to highlight or enhance certain aspects of the piece.  Each sculpture is coated with an environmentally friendly protectant that helps preserve the metal, yet doesn’t affect the quality.

Born and raised in Malibu, CA, Kim began his lifelong passion for crafting metal in shop class in junior high school.  He excelled with wood and metal.  After graduating high school, the movie industry beckoned, and Kim found himself working behind the camera.  He worked his way up to a Key Rigging Grip and traveled the world working on films such as “Dances with Wolves”, “Click” and “Secretariat”.  Working on movies gave Kim the opportunity to collaborate with many extremely talented and creative people and to further his love of working with metals.

“Although I enjoyed creating rigs that would allow the Director of Photography to achieve his vision of what the shot would look like, I wanted to do more.  I decided that creating art was my passion and wanted to express my visions and ideas in metal.  I then began to create art as I wanted to show others the inner beauty of metal by crafting unique pieces of both functional and abstract art.”

Now happily settled in the Conejo Valley with his wife, Susan, Kim credits the love and support of his family with where he is today.  His twin brother Steven an award-winning architect inspires him; though h believes that actually they inspire each other.  "We’re both creators".  Growing up in Malibu and always fascinated by the night sky has been his inspiration to create his celestial pieces.

Kim welcomes commission work and displays his sculptures at art festivals, galleries and restaurants throughout California.  He has exhibited pieces at the Westlake Village Art Guild in Westlake Village, CA. The Fine Art showcase of the Del mar fair, in Del Mar, CA.  He currently is exhibiting at the "Art and Soul on the 101" gallery in Encinitas, CA.

“My excitement to create the next piece and the fun I have creating it keeps me motivated.  Being able to create something out of nothing and make people happy with my art is the best thing about being an artist!”
