Heralding the Coming of Light - a Winter Solstice Celebration

The 2014 Winter Solstice Celebration in Oak Cliff will see entertainment, ceremonies of various types and even fortune telling throughout the evening, indoors and out.  Sponsored by the Labyrinth Walk Coffee House, this event is on Saturday, Dec. 20 from 6 pm to 9:30 pm at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Oak Cliff (UUCOC), 3839 W. Kiest Blvd, Dallas, 75233. There is no admission charge, but please bring a canned good for the needy and, if you have any, empty ink or toner cartridges for the recycling program.  Donations will be graciously accepted to cover the cost of the event and performers will accept tips for the time and talent they are donating. Indoor events scheduled for Faith Building: >Opening Ceremony will be led by Spin Goddess Kathy Kincaid. >Entertainment includes Emmeline, Steve Leach and the GloriChanters led by UUCOC’s own musical director Glorian Mulligan-Stratton.  More to be announced later. >Food Feast featurescookies, fruits, and nuts along with warming hot spiced cider and hot chocolate will be available until 9:00 pm.  Indoor events scheduled in Hope Building: ~StorytellersTwice Upon a Time Storytellers Gene and Peggy Helmick-Richardson will entertain you with yuletide tales intermittently throughout the evening. ~Fortune tellers of various sorts will be on hand to read your future.  A cash donation is welcome. ~Children’s activities include as arts & crafts. ~Food Feast featurescookies, fruits, and nuts along with warming hot spiced cider and hot chocolate will be available until 9:00 pm.  Outdoor ceremonies scheduled: *Earth Loom decorating behind the Faith building demonstrates the intention of weaving together the fabric of community, helping to unite hands and hearts while building and weaving an emblem and instrument of peace. Organic items will be available for guests to weave into the loom or you may bring your own cuttings, symbolically linking your space with ours. The ritual will be lead by Anita Mills and Barbara Fudge. *Meditative candle-lit Labyrinth Walk led by Mavis Belisle of UUCOC brings a different meaning and experience to everyone.  This labyrinth, built in 1999, is located behind the Gazebo.  *Ritual Yule Log burning is part of a traditional Yule or Christmas celebration in several European cultures and also associated with the winter solstice celebration.  This ritual will take place near the sweat lodge in the cleared area beyond the Labyrinth Walk.  Fritz Kuehn is in charge. *Closing Ceremony will be conducted by Raven Crow High Priestess Pam Kincaid who will also lead a spiral dance to the drumming of Drums, Not Guns.  Parking is available at the Church’s two lots and at neighboring churches.  For more information, see http://www.labyrinthwalkcoffeehouse.com.

A Tribute to the 1965 Selma March

On March 3, 7 pm, First Tuesday Social Justice Film Festival will present a tribute in films to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the thousand of peaceful, nonviolent demonstrators who marched from Selma, AL to the steps of the capital in Montgomery in March 1965 seeking voting rights for African Americans.  The event will take place at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Oak Cliff, 3839 W. Kiest Blvd., Dallas and is cosponsored by the UUCOC’s Social Justice Ministry and the Dallas Peace Center  http://dallaspeacecenter.org.  There is no admission fee and refreshments will be provided.  Audience discussion will follow, including a firsthand account. The 5 day, 54 mile march, was led by African Americans, the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, and including members of various religious denominations and other organizations.  The presentation will include films taken of the march and the violent incidents perpetrated on the marchers from various points of view.  Each month, First Tuesday Social Justice Films hosts free, public screenings of socially relevant films followed by audience talk back.   “Nuclear Savage” will be shown on April 7.  For more information and schedules, visit the website at http://www.firsttuesdayfilms.org/index.shtml

Gypsy Playboys Entertain in Jazz Under the Stars

The Gypsy Playboys are the opening act for this year's Jazz Under the Stars series presented by The Labyrinth Walk Coffee House (LWCH) on Sunday, May 15 in the Gazebo of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Oak Cliff, 3839 W. Kiest Blvd., Dallas, Texas 75233.  Doors open at 7:00.  Tickets are $10 and may be purchased in advance at the website or at the door on May 15.  An exciting and eclectic group, the Gypsy Playboys are just as at home on a big stage as they are in a smaller venue.  The band consists of two to five musicians who always deliver a fantastic, high energy show. http://www.thegypsyplayboys.com or https://www.facebook.com/The-Gypsy-Playboys-784802608238701/ Bring a lawn chair or blanket, and food and beverage (nothing harder than beer or wine, please) to enjoy in a beautiful setting with great music. Blues Under the Stars With Larry Lampkin + Art Show

Blues artist Larry Lampkin will be Under the Stars at the Labyrinth Walk Coffee House located at the UU Church of Oak Cliff.  A $10 donation is requested. Larry, a Fort Worth native, started writing songs about everyday life experiences and playing guitar as a teen. Mostly self taught musician, he had the privilege of taking some guitar lessons from experienced neighbor musicians, such as blues legend, U.P. Wilson. He toured the USA as a lead guitarist and band leader for recording artist, soul-blues singer, Vernon Garrett. Larry's first CD “When I Get Home” received immense air play and reviews.  He has performed on the American blues scene as a solo artist, sharing the stage and ticket with some of the greatest blues artist - Lucky Peterson, Buddy Guy, John Mayall and many more. He is one of the most exciting new blues guitar players coming onto the scene today.
