There are 3 types of cultured pearls.
1-Akoya. Saltwater pearls culture in Japan. One pearl in one oyster is started with a mother of pearl bead thus the traditional round shape is developed. Akoya pearls are typically in smaller sizes 4-10 mm. They are formed with a small quantity of nacre resulting in various shades of white colors.
2-Tahitian and South Sea Pearls. A similar cultured process as Japan in the Indoneasian and Australian waters. Larger oysters produce larger pearls (9-18 mm) and more nacre results in colors that range from yellow to black.
3-Freshwater cultured pearls are grown in teh freshwater lakes of China.Pieces of tissue from a weaker mollusk are introduced into a stronger mollusk to cause an irritation. This irritation results in the secretion of nacre which forms around the irritant, begining the creation of the cultured pearls and resutling in up to 40 pearls of carious shapesand sizes ineach mollusk, This process usually takes from 2-6 years. The longer the pearls stay in the mollusk the more the nacre forms and the larger the pearl. Sizes range from 4-13 mm. The higher nacre content in freshwater pearls corms pearl colors ranging from white to peach and pink to plum. China produces 95% of the freshwater pearls available in the world today.
