Mikkusu Art and Decor, New York, NY
ARTIST STATEMENT
Mikkusu is the Japanese word for “mix” and that's what I like to do: mix. People, foods, music, art, literature, aesthetics, philosophies….it leads to conversation and discovery.
My milieu is slip-casting, which can lend itself to sameness so I manipulate that process to create something that is wholly mine.
The results are pieces that demand mindfulness when handling them. They're fragile, pointy, wavy, drippy, sharp, askew, flanged, and more, requiring that you pay attention when interacting with them. They are not pieces you simply grab.
I create from the moment and don't repeat myself. And I employ a “yes, and…..” philosophy from years of improv. There are no accidents – only gifts that can make things even more interesting and beautiful. My organic pieces reflect life's ephemeral qualities and are unique. They demand attention, yes. But they're not precious. My pieces are meant to be used, displayed, shared, gifted, even broken. To live a life fully is to destroy it and that can mean destroying the things we love right alongside that life.
