Mixed Media Mosaics by Em

Member Since: August 12, 2015

After reading a magazine article about it, I started delving into mosaic art and started gathering the materials to get started on a project, and before I knew it, it had become a passion.  I don't remember why I decided I wanted to do mosaics…but after that first project - breaking the tiles with a hammer and tile nippers was like getting my stress out then meditating as I pieced it together into a design.

I love the way a piece looks after the grout is cleared off and everything comes together, “it is amazing because sometimes you don't truly know what the piece will really turn out like until then”.  The more texture the better and the more abstract & unusual the piece, the more appealing it is to me.  I don't want to do what everyone else has done. Some of my favorite materials are stained glass, ceramic tile, polymer clay and I love trying new materials on the art pieces such as jewelry, rocks, broken glass, etc.  A lot of times my pieces are experiments, I would say that approximately 50% of my materials were found objects recycled from used items bound to be thrown away.   My substrates are often old cabinet doors, cutting boards or old cabinet shelves, I love to use items that were bound to be destroyed.
