Tubaist Ralph Hepola: Sitting in at both St. Louis Jazz Jam Sessions

posted July 28, 2025   category » music, tuba,
St. Louis, one of the most-important cities in the history of jazz, has two excellent jam sessions. If you blow into town on the fourth Tuesday of the month as I did recently, you can play at Jazz St. Louis, 5:30- 8:00pm. Then stay overnight and play at The Dark Room, one of the Kranzberg Foundation venues, at the weekly Wednesday jam, 6:00-9:00pm. Both organizations are based in the impressive Grand Center Arts District.

I sat in with formidable musicians at both venues: at Jazz St. Louis, pianist Antonio Foster, bassist Ben Coan and drummer Jeffery Dhoruba Hill (only his yellow stocking cap is visible in the photo). That jam is hosted by pianist Adaron “Pops” Jackson. The Dark Room jam is hosted by renowned bassist Bob DeBoo with whom I was also fortunate enough to play.

Muralist Roberto Regalado takes us step-by-step through the creation of his huge portrait of tuba player Ralph Hepola

posted July 2, 2025   category » music, tuba,

Many people have asked about the wonderful artwork of muralist Roberto Regalado. These photos give us some insight into how he creates images. Because Roberto is a muralist, he is accustomed to painting on huge spaces such as buildings. The smallest canvas he ever paints on is 50 X 50 inches; like this portrait.

Ralph Hepola - Sitting In at The Nash in Phoenix

posted February 19, 2025   category » music, tuba,

I just returned from two weeks in Phoenix, Arizona, the fifth-largest metro area in the U.S., where I spent considerable time downtown at The Nash a.k.a. Jazz in Arizona Center, a non-profit organization. I attended four jam sessions and sat in with formidable musicians including saxophonist Clark Gibson; pianists Raul Yanez & Joel Goldenthal; bassists Chris Fenet, Ellis Green & Ted Sistrunk and drummer Adam Clark. I also attended excellent shows by The Power Trio including drummer Lewis Nash with special guest Bill Easley, as well as the Detroit group, Small Creatures.

From their website: “Recognized by Downbeat Magazine as one of the “Great Jazz Venues in the World,” The Nash does much more than preserve an original American art form. The music room and education facility create a community of jazz enthusiasts and musicians who build on the past to create a modern musical experience.”
