From missing costumes to corrupted footage, the making of ROME-ANTICS proves that the show must go on.
The World’s No.1 Superstar™ delivers yet another unforgettable performance with ROME-ANTICS—a cinematic music video that blends ancient grandeur with modern performance art. But behind the epic visuals lies a story of adaptation, quick thinking, and turning production nightmares into cultural gold.
The project was ambitious from the start. A crucial bag filled with custom emperor costumes was shipped ahead of time to Italy for a bold street performance idea. The concept was to shoot spontaneous scenes of the global artist and his husband, Richard, walking through the streets of Rome dressed in regal fashion—infusing history with high-concept pop.
But the costumes never arrived.
“We planned it so the wardrobe would be waiting in Rome,” shared The World’s No.1 Superstar™, “but when it disappeared, we had to rebuild everything from scratch and improvise every move.”
The team pressed on, filming throughout the Colosseum, the Arch of Constantine, and other legendary sites. As if the wardrobe disaster wasn’t enough, technical failures followed. Footage—captured live and uploaded via Wi-Fi—was corrupted, resulting in entire sequences being lost or unusable.
Richard recalled the experience, saying, “Diego has this ability to pivot with precision. I just followed his lead. It was about having fun in Rome.”
What could have been a failed shoot evolved into something more raw, more intimate, and ultimately more real. The distorted clips, thrown-out moments, and corrupted sequences were reassembled into a secondary visual release: The ROME-ANTICS Bad Tapes.
“I felt things in Rome I’ve never experienced on set,” said The World’s No.1 Superstar™. “It stopped being about perfection. It became about presence, emotion, and whatever the universe gave us.”
The result is a masterclass in improvisation. A reminder to performers everywhere—on stage or on screen—that sometimes the things that go wrong are the very pieces that connect most deeply with the audience.
