I describe my style as "happy energy." Because at the heart of my work is the expression of joy through color, pattern and texture. My background in graphic and surface design influences each of my original pieces.
Most of my work is hand built pottery in a variety of shapes and sizes. I begin by rolling out a slab of clay. After creating a clay base shape, I often paint an illustration with underglazes and slips. Once the clay dries to the leather-hard stage, I carve into the clay creating lines and patterns to enhance my design using a technique called sgraffito. After the bisque firing, I continue painting the illustration with underglazes and glazes and finish it with a final firing.
A few years ago, I decided to challenge my creative process to include the growing recycle/reuse movement. I scour thrift shops and rummage sales for items that will become my “canvas.” The object's existing pattern and shape inspire and influence my painting. I enjoy transforming what was once an unwanted item into a valued work of art.
I alter each piece using a variety of paint and textural mediums. Most of my projects are china plates, glass bottles, and vases. Though I will paint on most anything I find that inspires me. I bring the machine made back to its beautiful and imperfect human made origins.
For instance, on a smooth glass vase, I will layer and texturize the surface to make it look more organic. I keep the inside of the vase untouched because I love the contrast in surface appearance. For the plates, I look at the existing surface pattern and use my imagination to incorporate this design into a new work of art.
