With todays technology anybody can go to the craft store and buy a computer paper cut-out machine for scrapbooking. Hand paper cutting also known as "Silhouetting" is considered a "lost art".
Hand paper cutting originated in the 1700’s as an inexpensive alternative to oil paintings. The art of silhouette cutting reached its "golden age" in the 1800's. Many European silhouettists immigrated to America catering to the American politicians and the very wealthy. Others traveled to county fairs and small towns capturing the profiles and the hearts of countless thousands of ordinary folk. Silhouettes remain as popular today as ever.
Compared to most popular artist work today there are only a handful of silhouette paper cutters.
