Talking Tricksters Studio, Syracuse, NY
Talking Tricksters Studio is a collaboration between Amy Komar Hare and Sheila Carol Roock, ceramic artists who produce functional and decorative ceramic objects.
Amy handbuilds and specializes in whimsical surface design. She developed our signature Trickster image and theme. She is known for her poetry and storytelling in clay. Her
art training included the Art Students League in New York City, graduate work at New York University, and she earned her MFA from Syracuse University.
Sheila works her magic on the wheel and spins great functional pottery, especially her teapots, which have a classic aesthetic and functionality. They are designed to pour well,
keep your tea cozy and warm, and have a built in tea leaf filter and lid that locks in place. Sheila has studied under Sandy Pierantozzi and Neil Patterson, attended Philadelphia University
City Arts League, where she was the Pottery Studio Manager.
We employ a variety of surface design techniques, applying elements at multi-layers, including using original stamps, sgraffito, slip transfer, carving, resist, hand applied underglaze and glazes.
Narratives are often woven into our work. Many are drawn from trickster or traditional stories. Our signature image is Amy's interpretation of the trickster archetype. The trickster is playful, clever, often a trouble-maker as well as a wise fool. Trickster stories are found in nearly every culture across place and time. They remind us we are human and teach us about ourselves. Our other design lines include Ancient Voices, Mr. Blufoot, Roockware, and The Miguen Stories.
