The Griggs are based out of Stanley NC consisting of 5 very dedicated people: Pete Grigg, (sings) Terry Grigg (guitar) Wayne Billings (mandolin) Arnold Clayton (banjo)& Zolia Clayton (bass) Formerly known as The Grigg Family Pete, Carol and son Terry had a gospel trio singing all over the southeast. In 1995 a tragic automobile accident killed Carol, leaving Pete and Terry to carry on as The Griggs. Pete Grigg learned to play while in the Navy during WWII. He was influenced by Bill Monroe, The Stanley Brothers, Louving Brothers. He married Carol in 1955 they moved from his hometown of Lincolnton to Charlotte NC there he met Bill Price and they became part of the Country Partners playing The Grand Ole Opry, Ernest Tubb Record shop, WWVA Barn Dance Other groups that he played with include The Blueridge Partners which did a TV show call Reb Town USA, The Blades of Bluegrass a group which he fronted. In 1975 Terry joined his mom and dad singing gospel music playing many venues and churches in the Southeast. Terry Grigg began learning to play the guitar and sing at the age of 6. When he reached 14 he was playing for The Molehill Highlanders an old time band featuring Clyde Williams on the fiddle. In 1979 he formed a group with Wayne Erbsen, The Back Country Bluegrass where he sang lead and tenor. Other groups he has been a member of Pinetucket, Sandy Valley Boys with Clarence Green, Carolina Cutups. In 1986 he formed his own group called The New Mountain Bluegrass with this group he played a radio show in Belmont on Saturdays, they did a TV Commerical for Route Nine a local show over WSOC-TV and was featured on America a TV show hosted by Mclean Stevenson. Also opened for Bill Monroe, Jim & Jesse, Osborne Brother Ralph Stanley. As Bill Monroe, Flatt and Scruggs Louvin Brothers Merle Haggard, Doyle Lawson are a few of his influences. Arnold Clayton Learned to play the banjo from Jimmy Bowens at age 14. He has won numerous banjo competitions around the NC and SC area. Arnold was the NC State Banjo Champion in 1981. He placed 6th at the National Banjo Competition in Winfield Kansas in 2006. He has played with several groups including Charlotte Grass, Nelson Young, Josh Graves, Curley Fallaw, The Sandy Valley Boys, & Down Home Remedy. Arnold also enjoys working on and building banjos, Wayne Billings learned to play at the age of 8 years taking violin lessons in school at age 18 he learned to play the guitar. in 1972 he helped formed the country group Kinsey Raiders who opened and played for Loretta Lynn, Conway Twitty, Peggy Sue, Kitty Wells to name a few. Bouncing from country to bluegrass he learned to play the mandolin and played in numerous groups Roustabouts, Dixie Mountain Grass, Traditional Ties to name a few. He has opened for Doyle Lawson, Jim & Jesse Country Gentleman Seldom Scene Jimmy Martin Mac Wiseman. His influence is Don Rich great tenor singer for Buck Owens. Zolia Clayton has been playing the upright bass for 30 years and has played in several Jam Sessions around NC and SC. She has played mostly for Charlotte Grass. She a wonderful singer, whether she sings lead or just harmonizes. She a grand lady and we’re proud to have her as one of The Griggs The Griggs just last year won first place at Jeff and Sheri Easter Homecoming Festival with the song Amazing Grace. Amazing Grace and Willie Roy are 2 of the ten we recorded at Jeff and Sheri‘s Studio. The Griggs sing at Churches, Homecomings, Festivals, Weddings, Restaurants, Pig Pickings, and any place that will have us.
