HOW THE WHIMSY WORKS BEGAN…
Founded in 2012
Once upon a time in the spring of 2012, while searching in vain for the enchanting altered art dome pendants I love so much either because the ‘unique’ factor was missing or breaking the bank wasn’t an option, I realized I could make truly lovely pendants for myself for a fraction of the cost. It simultaneously struck me that I could also SELL them for a reasonable price.
Eureka!
Up to that time, I had also been creating bottle cap necklaces, magnets and pins for a hobby and giving them away to friends and family. Said friends and family suggested many times that I sell them. It then occurred to me that I could sell my striking little BC items along with my pendants, and people would actually BUY all this stuff.
Eureka!
For months, amidst all these splendid epiphanies, my extensive collection of faery folk had been clamoring (vociferously I might add, for such tiny creatures) for some affordable housing. They had been sitting, standing, stomping and flying about my curio cabinet for years, waiting for their little nests to arrive. The crowded conditions were making them a bit testy. Having failed to find any 4 to 6-inch tall faery dwellings handcrafted from natural materials that I could afford or particulary fancied for this restless bunch, I began making my own. When people noticed them and wanted to know where they could get one, I realized that I could sell these to other faery lovers! They were – in their wee way – totally AWESOME. Yeah, that’s right. . .
Eureka!
And thus, The Whimsy Works was launched!
My partner and co-designer, Raj Denasetti, suggested we go large on the pendants and bottle cap products to begin with, as the faery cottages require a good deal more time to create – so the cottages for the time being are on the back-burner (with the exception of the ones I built for my curio-collection, just to placate the little buggers…)
Within the next year, we should have enough inventory to go back to work on the cottages. In the meantime, we plan to strike out into the festival and craft fair world to sell our wares.
We hope to live happily ever after in The Whimsy Works. That is, if the business is successful enough to subsidize faery housing sufficient to keep our fey population from open rebellion…
