My work is created, for the most part, with polymer clay. I blend custom colors from Premo Sculpey clay using a pasta machine and hand build the elements of my design. I assemble these elements into a pattern to create a cane; a log of clay which has the design running all the way through. Many of my designs are created using the fine art technique of Millefiori. This is a technique that glass artists have used for centuries and Millefiori means “thousand flowers”. The resulting canes are then reduced; carefully stretched by hand to make them smaller and longer. Thin slices of the cane reveal the detailed design inside and are used in my pieces. I often use texture plates, inclusions, acrylic paint, oil paint, alchohol inks, gems or mica powders to enhance the end result of my art.
Textures of nature and beautiful insects are the main focus of my art. My wall art tiles feature a background texture of flower petals, fungi, leaves, bark or other interesting texture found in nature, but the main attraction is the colorful and detailed insect who calls it home. Another of my favorite creations are what I call “screen ornaments”; beautiful and whimsical insects that can hang from any window or door screen; all made with polymer clay, wire and beads.
I hand-sculp ornaments; some over a glass ball ornament. I create various animals, angels and Christmas beings such as Santas, elves, and snowmen. I cover glass vases or bottles with polymer clay giving the look of bark with various fungi; sometimes also featuring an insect.
