Jared Ailstock's Early Life
Jared Ailstock is a self-taught artist who grew up in a tiny town outside of New York. As a young man, he loved to draw and paint, and he was inspired by the artwork that came out of the nearby Carnegie Museum.
Ailstock’s life took an unexpected twist when he found himself struggling to find work after college. He decided to try his hand at painting as his fallback career and found success in the art world shortly thereafter.
In this piece, we learn about what led Ailstock on the path to becoming an artist.
The Artist's Process
I've been painting for about 10 years now and I like to paint different types of things, from figure drawing to landscapes to still lives. I like the freedom that painting gives me to work on a variety of pieces and experiment with various techniques. Sometimes that means working in oils, sometimes in acrylics, sometimes in watercolor.
What makes me happy is being able to create a piece that comes alive and captivates someone's attention. I feel like the challenge of trying something new or pulling off a difficult idea makes it all worth it when I get an amazing reaction from people.
