Hnefatafl was one of several "King's Table" games popular in Europe before the advent of Chess about 1100 AD. The Vikings spread it through out Europe, Great Britain and as far east as the Ukraine. The raiders are attacking the king from four directions. The king, aided by his loyal guards, must escape to one of the corners of the board.
