Dion Hitchens' contemporary sculptures function as icons on a landscape, helping to signify the 'unseen'. They allow an audience access to stories, values and philosophies that help shape communities, businesses, and individuals.
He recently completed work with Fonterra assisting them with the alignment of their company values to cultural stories, through the creation of a Mauri / touch stone for their foyer. He has worked in international residencies both in Banff, Canada and Taiwan. His work can be found in major collections around the country including: Te Papa Tongarewa Museum of New Zealand, Waikato Museum and Auckland City Art Gallery. He also has work in the public art collections of Auckland City Council and Hamilton City Council.
His work engages the 'space between' our personal paradigms. A space informed from both cultural and philosophical values. Dion says, “I provide icons for both historical and personal stories, being most interested in the 'unseen' values, experiences and philosophies that inform our relationships to the natural world around us. I am interested in how the values from the past can inform our actions for the future. My work explores the connection between all things (Whakapapa).” He is of Tuhoe, Ngati Porou, (New Zealand Maori), Chinese, English and Scottish descent.
